Sonnet 18 When does the heart retire to its chest Away from draft and cold and heat and pain? When does the mind close weary eyes in rest Never to see or hear or smell the rain? How would the soul depart if it would go To find some other vacancy away From all the drifting specks of dust that flow Out from the walking hut where it had stayed? Why would the restless traveler decline To live within the presence of the ones That made him from the dust and the divine To live within and blot out all their suns? If only to be free of saving grace, To live as Death, and live in Death's embrace.

Sonnet 14

Sonnet 14 There lived, inside a forest by the sea, A hermit waiting for the world to end. At night he heated grass to make his tea, Inside a hollow sapling's fatter end. He wandered through the shallows in the morning, He wandered through his memories at noon, He listened to the eagles' idle warning That emptiness would follow far too soon. One day, as he was walking on the shore, He came upon a many chambered shell And as a raven croaked a nevermore, His breath was caught beneath a languid swell. A cave inside a forest in the sand Stands waiting for the idle touch of man.
